Part J4 Building Fabric

This 31-minute session technically covers NCC 2022 Part J4 Building Fabric assessment in Better Buildings. Using a commercial model, it guides users through evaluating fabric elements against deemed-to-satisfy and performance solutions.

Key Course Content

The course begins with an introduction to the NCC 2022 Part J4 framework, highlighting the specific sections available in the workflow (J4.D3 to J4.D7). Participants will learn to familiarise themselves with model inputs, specifying various fabric elements such as walls (e.g., brick veneer, rain screen), roofs, floors (e.g., slab on ground), and glazing (windows, curtain walls) to meet deemed-to-satisfy requirements.

A key focus is understanding the distinction between qualitative (J4D3) and quantitative (J4D4-J4D7) provisions. The session delves into the crucial 'Simulate shading multipliers' toggle, explaining its role in transitioning J4D6 compliance from deemed-to-satisfy to a performance solution by calculating unique, simulated shading coefficients.

Participants will learn to run simulations, save results for later access, and interpret the outcome summary, including identifying non-compliant elements via colour-coded indicators. A significant portion covers reviewing detailed results and performing a critical 'Geometry Summary' quality check to ensure input accuracy. The course concludes with guidance on understanding the thermal envelope visualisation and generating comprehensive compliance reports, with an emphasis on providing additional information for performance solutions.

Learning Outcomes

Participants will gain advanced skills in applying NCC 2022 Part J4, technically specifying components, interpreting simulation outputs, and generating robust compliance documentation for commercial projects.

Course Completion

A Certificate of Completion is awarded upon achieving an 80% pass mark on the final quiz.
